In 1959, The Hope Heart Institute was founded by Dr. Lester R. Sauvage, a world renowned cardiovascular surgeon and research scientist. The Hope's mission is to conduct cardiovascular research and educate the world population about heart health and wellness.
The Hope Heart Institute has created the Kids Take Heart program to teach children how to make lifestyle choices that promote good health, fitness and general wellness. This eight-week program teaches children ages 8 - 12, about anatomy, fitness, nutrition and goal setting. Each kit comes in five large tubs full of teaching materials, like foam hearts, models, and activities. The main attraction is the 6 foot by 12 foot circulatory system map that is big enough for kids to walk on to follow the human blood circuit.
Spearheaded by Quota member Jane Huston, Quota International of Kent Valley, the Rotary Club of Kent, and Kiwanis each donated $1,120 to the Kent School District toward the purchase of a Kids Take Heart kit. Physical Education teachers within the district will be able to sign up for the kit for a two week loan period.
